ESD Methods

Some ESD learning units go beyond traditional school curriculum and encourage children, young people, and adults to critically question familiar concepts, examine them from different perspectives, and take action themselves. Therefore, expanded and diverse methods are also recommended to initiate a learning process in line with ESD .

The collection of the Bavarian State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research (ISB) provides an overview of a selection of methods that appear particularly suitable for ESD. The individual methods are briefly presented, and links or literature are recommended for further discussion.

The ISB collection includes the following methods:

  • dilemma discussion
  • Inclusion of extracurricular learning locations
  • Learning at stations
  • Learning through engagement / Service learning
  • Methodology toolbox from the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb)
  • Mystery
  • open space
  • Planning and role-playing games
  • Reflectories – interactive learning tools on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Fabric stories
  • scenario technique
  • Experience water – on the road with the water suitcase
  • World Café
  • future workshop

Further, sometimes highly specialised methods for innovative learning formats (ESD) can also be found at the following link (only in German) to the DG-HochN-Wiki, a platform for knowledge management and networking around sustainability at universities.
